Image:tiny.jpgCommemoration of Elli Perkins

Elli Perkins died March 13th, 2003 at the hands of her Schizophrenic son, Jeremy. Elli was stabbed 77 times after years of trying to help her son's mental health condition using Scientology. Scientologists are often opposed to any form of psychiatric care, stating that it 'does not work'. After time spent away from his family at Sea Org, Jeremy was arrested and had a court ordered psychiatric exam (2001), the conclusion was that he suffered from Schizophrenia. After his release from custody, Jeremy began seeing a doctor who was also a Scientologist. The doctor concluded that "he was suffering from certain digestive problems, that he had certain chemical toxins in his body. And he needed to be purged of it. And he needed to be energized through vitamin therapy." Elli Perkins gave Jeremy the vitamin treatment to no avail, he was convinced that his mother was trying to poison him. Elli took her son to a "natural healer," Albert Brown, and is reported to have agreed to send Jeremy to live with him for treatment. The treatments in question were deemed suitable for Jeremy, as they were 'in-line' with Scientology practices in regards to the treatment of mental health disorders. Jeremy was set to leave in the afternoon of March 13th. On this day, following a fight with his mother, he took a shower during which he attempted to slit his own wrists. After exiting the shower he went to the kitchen where Elli was on the phone, took a steak knife, and brutally stabbed her to death. In a statement to the police, Jeremy said:

I tried to slit my wrists after the shower … but I wouldn't die so I decided to do my mom in instead...She was screaming, "No, Jeremy, don't." I stabbed her about four to five times before she fell down. … I then stabbed her about ten more times in the stomach after she fell to the ground. I knew she was a goner...I believe that I have lived different lives for the past thousand years, and wished I was in another life now.

On Saturday, March 15th, we wish to hold a memorial for Elli Perkins. A moment of silence will be held for her. Leaflets and fliers will be passed out during our protest and marches detailing Elli's murder, the stance of Scientology on the treatment of mental health disorders and describing other instances where the Church has denied their parishioners access to needed medication.

Image:tiny.jpgCelebration of L Ron Hubbard's Birthday

The man behind the creation of the Church of Scientology was named Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. Protesters will be highlighting many of L. Ron's quotes, frauds, illegal deeds and questionable tactics during this protest. Fliers and signs will introduce readers to the founder and discuss how Scientology has continued unfair and illegal practices after his passing, which was followed by the rise of David Miscavige to power within the Church. As with many birthday celebrations, party hats will be donned and cake will be had. (Cake discussion continued below)

Image:tiny.jpgFocus on Tax Exempt Status

Currently, the Church of Scientology has a deal with the IRS. This deal gives the organization a tax exempt status that applies to no other business or religion in the United States. On 1 October 1993, the Church of Scientology obtained tax exemption from the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This ended 26 years of what the Church itself has described as a "war" against the IRS, in which it used extraordinary and in many cases illegal tactics - bugging government offices, stealing mountains of classified files, having private detectives pursue senior government officials, launching thousands of lawsuits, publishing full-page attack adverts in US daily newspapers, and so on. An essential element of the Church of Scientology's campaign for tax exemption was the huge number of lawsuits which it (and individual members) launched against the IRS. According to Scientology's de facto leader, David Miscavige, at the time of the tax-exemption agreement in 1993, there were over 2,500 lawsuits in progress.

Scientology operatives committed infiltration, wiretapping, and theft of documents in government offices, most notably those of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Eleven highly-placed Church executives, including Mary Sue Hubbard (wife of founder L. Ron Hubbard and second-in-command of the organization), pleaded guilty or were convicted in federal court of obstructing justice, burglary of government offices, and theft of documents and government property. The case was United States vs. Mary Sue Hubbard et al., 493 F. Supp. 209 (D.D.C. 1979).

Image:tiny.jpgEducation of General Public

Knowledge is key, and knowledge is free. It is presently our aim to inform the public of the truth surrounding the Church of Scientology, their extraordinary status with the IRS, their human rights violations and their crimes. Our demonstration will actively reach out to the public, raising awareness of these and related issues.

Image:tiny.jpgEducation of Current Scientologists

While the organization which calls itself the Church of Scientology is malign in nature, the people who are trapped within it are generally decent individuals with a genuine desire for self-improvement. Many of them are searching for a way out of the cult, but find their path to freedom obstructed by threats of retribution and a lack of social supports outside the organization. Anonymous is committed to educating those who remain unwittingly ensnared within the Church's web of deceit by pointing them toward information and resources that would help them to disentangle themselves from the Church of Scientology. Documents and messages that are spread by way of the public demonstration being planned are integral to reaching and assisting these individuals in their search for a way out.
